FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before your first appointment. If your question isn’t answered here, just get in touch — we’re always happy to help.
01
What is the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy?
While there can sometimes be an overlap, chiropractors have a specialised focus on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. At City Chiropractic we use a variety of manual therapies, exercise prescription and lifestyle advice to optimise your recovery.
02
What is that “popping” sound during an adjustment?
It is perfectly normal. The sound is simply the release of gas from the fluid within the joint space. It isn’t bones rubbing together, and for most patients it is followed by a feeling of relief.
03
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Yes. Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available. In the UK, chiropractors are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), ensuring strict standards of practice.
04
What should I wear to my appointment?
We recommend comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily, such as gym wear. While we can treat you in most attire, being able to move freely helps us get the most out of your assessment.
05
Do I need an X-ray?
Not everyone needs an X-ray. Whether one is recommended depends on your individual case and is determined during your consultation and examination. We have a modern digital X-ray suite on site, so imaging can be performed quickly when clinically appropriate.
06
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
Every patient is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The amount of care needed depends on your symptoms, overall health, lifestyle and how your body responds to treatment. Your chiropractor will explain their recommendations after your initial consultation and examination.
07
Can I claim through my private health insurance?
Many major insurers (such as AXA, Vitality or Simply Health) cover chiropractic care. We recommend contacting your provider to check your level of cover.
08
Do I need a referral to visit a chiropractor?
No. Chiropractors are highly qualified primary health practitioners and a referral from your GP is not required. Our chiropractors will perform a comprehensive health and physical assessment to formulate a working diagnosis prior to any treatment taking place. If chiropractic care is not suitable, your chiropractor can refer you on to another health professional.
09
Can children or seniors see a chiropractor?
Yes. Our chiropractors are experienced with patients of all ages, and care is always adapted to the individual. The techniques used are chosen based on your health history, comfort, and clinical indication, so treatment can be lighter, more gradual, or more supportive depending on what is appropriate for you.
